It is a well-known fact that from March 10 to 28, the Comedy Festival of Vienna and surrounding areas radiates good humor in partner municipalities. What is less known is that behind the scenes, some artists on the bill bring culture into schools to interact with young audiences.
Under this title, on Wednesday, March 18, before his show The Music, my Mother!, which he performed that evening on the stage of the Pont-Évêque theater, the comedian Étienne S visited two classes with schedules focused on music, jazz, and choir at Georges Brassens College. An intervention in line with the musical education provided by their teacher, Philippe Gouby. “It’s a meaningful opportunity because these are students who already have a deep musical culture and are eager to progress,” emphasized the teacher.
An Enchanted Interlude
Evidently delighted to talk about his passion for percussion, Étienne S immediately told the students, “I’m Belgian, a comedian by profession, and a professional musician who has chosen unconventional instruments.” A life path with an uncertain destiny that led him to travel extensively, to China, Canada, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, and to immerse himself in world music. “I thought that with this diversity of instruments and blend of cultures, we could create something beautiful!”
Bongos, darboukas, maracas, shakers, drumsticks, beatboxing, the artist demonstrated and led practical exercises, teaching the students how to compose movement and introducing them to technique. Like a good conductor, he had them work on sign language to keep the tempo and achieve beautiful harmony.
The Comedy Festival of Vienna and surrounding areas is also a vehicle for learning and cultural exposure for all.
