Will the future floating wind farm in southern Brittany interfere with army radars?

The floating offshore wind farm project carried by the company Pennavel, which will be located off the coast of Morbihan, requires a specific adaptation in the choice of the size of the wind turbines and their location. Indeed, their installation must not conflict with the range of the army radars that are in operation along the Breton coast, such as at the Lann-Bihoué naval airbase (Morbihan).

A convention in preparation

Pennavel, the consortium of companies Elicio France SAS and BayWa r.e. France SAS that is leading the floating offshore wind farm project off Groix and Quiberon is in contact with the Ministry of Armed Forces, from the early stages of the project:

The army has a number of radars along the Breton coast and one of the questions we’ve been asking ourselves since the beginning, but that the state has also been asking, is to ensure that the development of the park and the installation of structures such as wind turbines does not affect the visibility of these radars.

Jérémy Hilt, director of Pennavel

Discussions are ongoing. “The first is that there is a convention being prepared foreseeing the stopping of the wind turbines if deemed necessary by the armed forces,” said Jérémy Hilt.

Compensation radars

“The second is the implementation of compensation radars at our expense, if it turns out that the final positioning of the wind turbines or their size dictates. In this case, we would put a new radar either on the wind farm field or outside of it,” announces Jérémy Hilt.

Different scenarios are being considered by the army depending on the design of the wind turbines. Their size and location will not have the same consequence. “According to the evolving needs of the army, we can have different actions on the field,” explains the director of Pennavel.

The primary parameter to take into account is the visibility of the radars and ensuring that their utility is not hindered by the field.
