The Los Angeles Unified teachers and support staff unions have set a deadline of April 14 for the district to agree on new contracts or face a potential strike. The announcement was made during a rally in downtown Los Angeles. Earlier this year, United Teachers Los Angeles and SEIU Local 99 members voted to authorize their leaders to call a strike due to stalled negotiations on pay and benefits. The Associated Administrators of Los Angeles, representing principals, is also in talks with the district.

A strike would likely result in the closure of schools affecting approximately 400,000 students, similar to a three-day strike in 2023. The unions are pushing for pay increases, which the district claims it cannot afford. Despite ongoing negotiations, the unions feel the district’s offers do not meet their demands. UTLA appealed to LAUSD’s board ahead of a committee meeting, urging active involvement in the bargaining process.

UTLA’s vice president, Julie Van Winkle, emphasized the importance of settling the contract before resorting to a strike, highlighting the need for affordable living conditions in the city and sufficient resources in schools. Los Angeles Unified acknowledges the value of its employees but cites the necessity of making tough financial decisions to address a budget deficit. Recently, over 650 LAUSD employees, including many support staff, received layoff notices.
