A Lebanese soldier was killed and four others were injured in an Israeli airstrike in the town of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army said on Tuesday, as hostilities escalate between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. The soldiers were hit while traveling in a car and motorcycle and were taken to the hospital, the army said in a post on X, adding in a later statement that one of the injured had died from their wounds. The strike comes as Israeli attacks intensify across Lebanon, resulting in over 880 deaths and displacing more than one million people, according to Lebanese authorities. The Lebanese army has also reported losses in recent days, including an incident at the beginning of the month in which three soldiers were among those killed in Israeli strikes, according to the army. The Israeli army, which has occupied five positions in southern Lebanon since a ceasefire in November 2024 with Hezbollah, sent additional forces into the country after the Shiite Muslim group fired a salvo of rockets on March 2, dragging Lebanon into the widening conflict between the U.S. and Israel with Iran. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Lebanon that they could face territorial losses unless Hezbollah is disarmed.
