Arrived in Montbéliard in 1987, Monique Scol has become an unavoidable figure in the arts. From the National Stage to the direction of the MALS, she continues to irrigate the territory with festivals such as Château en scène and Les Quatre Saisons.
Monique Scol is not originally from the region, but Montbéliard has become her adopted city since the fall of 1987. Recruited at the Cultural Action Center, she learned the ropes of the profession from great directors for nearly 17 years, a formative period that sealed her fate with the territory: “For 17 years, I worked really closely with the directors and learned a lot, I enjoyed it immensely.”
After a stint at the helm of the MALS in Sochaux, nicknamed “The Grand Dame,” where she managed nearly 50 curtain raisings per season, she now dedicates herself to bringing culture out of the halls. Through festivals like Château en scène or Les Quatre Saisons, she focuses on accessibility and artistic education for all audiences. For her, choosing artists is a constant quest for excellence: “We don’t choose for ourselves, we choose for a broad audience that we want to satisfy.”
Today, as head of the Simone Veil Cultural Center, Monique Scol maintains a freshness and unimpaired curiosity. Her journey, marked by encounters and challenges, remains guided by a deep love for artists and their capacity to surprise. She sees art as an essential tool for the development of youth: “It allows us to grow in good intelligence, it is important to educate artistically and to open up.”
