The 98th Annual Academy Awards were hosted on Sunday, March 15, with the year’s top films and actors competing for the industry’s most prestigious prizes.
The show was hosted by silver screen veteran Conan O’Brien, who delivered an entertaining yet relatively safe evening of textbook award show jokes. O’Brien poked fun at some of the big names and narratives from the year while only pushing the boundaries sporadically with a handful of quips around social issues and the current political climate.
“One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” were the big winners of the evening, scooping up six and four wins, respectively.
The Leonardo DiCaprio-helmed “One Battle After Another” took home the top prize for Best Picture alongside victories for Directing, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor.
Sinners creator Ryan Coogler won for Best Original Screenplay while his film’s star Michael B. Jordan took home the award for Best Actor.
Other winners from the night included Jessie Buckley, who secured an Oscar for Best Actress after delivering a stellar performance for her portrayal as William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet,” while global radio sensation “Golden” from K-Pop Demon Hunters won for Best Original Song.
The evening also featured Sinners’ Autumn Durald Arkapaw becoming the first female to win the category for Best Cinematographer, as well as a lengthy “In Memorium” for the passing of Hollywood legends Diane Keaton and Robert Redford.
Notably snubbed from the night were Timothy Chalamet’s table tennis Odyssey “Marty Supreme” and Brazilian hit film “Secret Agent,” which both left the ceremony empty-handed.
