2026 Municipal Elections in Avignon: Culture, Financial Windfall but Poor Relation of the Campaign

    On the last 4th of March, during the La Provence   Confluence debate, a spectator named Samantha spoke up: “I am sad to see some candidates’ lack of knowledge about the cultural offerings in Avignon.

    Several candidates for the town hall (Galzi, Fiori, Rigault) continuously emphasize the need to culturally animate Avignon beyond the three weeks of July. This contradicts the title of the leading cultural city in France bestowed by the newspaper Le Parisien in March 2025. This top national position does not only result from the festivals (In and Off) in the summer, but also from its vitality throughout the year.

    In fact, surprisingly, David Fournier, responsible for Cécile Helle’s track record as deputy mayor, does not use this undeniable argument from Le Parisien. A ranking that demonstrates that among cities of similar size (Dunkerque, Nouméa, Poitiers), Avignon stands out notably, with its opera house (Grand Avignon), around twenty permanent theaters, its large generalist hall (Confluence), eight museums (including at least three of international scope), and its nationally renowned festivals (Frames, Les Hivernale…
