At least 10 people have been confirmed dead after a passenger boat collided with a pontoon bridge and capsized on the Yamuna River in Mathura. The vessel, which was carrying 27 passengers, overturned following the impact, triggering an emergency rescue operation. Police said bodies have been recovered, while efforts continue to determine the number of those still missing.
“So far, 10 bodies have been recovered,” senior police officer Shailesh Kumar Pandey told reporters.
Rescue teams, including fire service personnel and divers, were immediately deployed to the scene, with additional support from the National Disaster Response Force to aid search and recovery operations.
Reacting to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives, stating that he was deeply saddened by the incident and wished the injured a quick recovery. He added that local authorities were providing necessary assistance to victims and their families.
Boat accidents are a recurring concern across India’s inland waterways, often attributed to overcrowding, poor enforcement of safety standards, and inadequate safety equipment.
In a similar incident in 2024, 15 people, including 13 schoolchildren, lost their lives after a boat capsized in Gujarat.
