You may have seen a lot of news about the upcoming World Cup in the media. Streetsblog mentioned how it would have been great to host public events in our public spaces like streets, plazas, and parks. However, other sources reported that this will not be the case, with businesses and the city’s ban on new events during the World Cup causing concern.

Streetsblog, celebrating its 20th anniversary in June, aimed to hold a street festival to honor its team and invite the public to join in the celebration. Unfortunately, the idea fell through due to the high cost of closing streets and the city’s restrictions on public events.

The streets blog team attempted to inquire about the reasons behind these restrictions, suspecting NYPD’s involvement in the decision-making process. The response from Mayor Mamdani emphasized the need for safety and preparation for the upcoming World Cup events.

Despite the setback, Streetsblog remains hopeful about hosting events in the future. In other news, various updates on urban transportation and city events were shared, including a partial shutdown of Penn Station for the World Cup, Mayor Mamdani’s authority over NYPD policy, and upcoming transportation improvements in the city.

Stay tuned for more updates on these topics, as well as the outcome of the investigation on “The Moped King” and upcoming public space awards event.
