The ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran officially took effect on Wednesday, April 8. The United States announced a halt to their attacks on Iran for two weeks, and Tehran must in return temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

From Israel’s side, the government announced its support for Donald Trump’s decision to suspend attacks on Iran, while specifying that the truce did not include Lebanon. This statement contradicts an earlier announcement by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a mediator in the conflict, who assured that the ceasefire applied “everywhere, including in Lebanon and elsewhere“.

The Israeli army disagreed and intends to continue “the battle” against the Hezbollah Islamist movement, Tehran’s ally, declaring they would strike in southern Lebanon on Wednesday morning and renew evacuation orders for the population of that large region. Colonel Avichay Adraee issued an “urgent and strong warning to the residents of the city of Tyre, especially in Shabriha“, urging them to evacuate “immediately“. Later on Wednesday, Israel conducted a series of strikes on Beirut and announced its “largest coordinated strike” against Hezbollah since February 28.

These simultaneous Israeli strikes, conducted without warning and targeting the heart of Beirut and several other regions in Lebanon, resulted in 182 deaths and 890 injuries according to a non-final official toll. In response, Hezbollah claimed to have bombed northern Israel overnight, in retaliation for their “violation of the ceasefire“.
