In the backstage of the truce signed between the United States and Iran, Pakistan has maneuvered, taking advantage of its relations with both belligerents to achieve a temporary ceasefire and initiate negotiations to end the war in the Middle East.

“The Pakistan has achieved one of its greatest diplomatic successes in years,” stated Michael Kugelman, a specialist in South Asia. “It has also proven many skeptics wrong who did not believe it had the capacity to carry out such a complex and risky endeavor.”

Pakistan’s strong ties with the United States and Iran, being the only country in the region to maintain good relations with both, have been highlighted by former ambassador Asif Durrani’s statements.

Pakistan shares a 900-kilometer border with Iran, leading to deep historical, cultural, and religious connections between the two countries. The diplomatic relations of Pakistan also represent Iranian interests in Washington, where Tehran does not have an embassy.

Additionally, the powerful Chief of the Pakistani Army, Marshal Asim Munir, has developed a personal relationship with President Donald Trump. The Pakistan-China relation also played a crucial role in convincing Iran to come to the negotiating table.

In terms of economic importance, Pakistan’s neutrality is vital as it depends on hydrocarbon imports passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Ending the war would not only enhance regional stability but also boost Pakistan’s international standing.

The next step involves hosting American and Iranian delegations in Islamabad from April 10. Asif Durrani, the former ambassador, explains that Pakistan could facilitate resolving outstanding differences between the two parties. Palestin also supported Trump’s decision to suspend attacks on Iran, but clarification is needed regarding the inclusion of Lebanon in the ceasefire.

Overall, Pakistan’s strategic position and diplomatic efforts have positioned it as a crucial mediator in the conflict resolution process in the Middle East.
