Los Angeles Angels superstar center fielder Mike Trout had to leave the team’s 8-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon after getting hit by a pitch on his left hand in the eighth inning. Trout, who is 34 years old, initially went to first base after being hit by Casey Legumina’s pitch, but then had to be escorted to the dugout by the Angels’ training staff. He underwent X-rays and is currently considered day-to-day, according to Angels manager Kurt Suzuki.

Suzuki explained in his postgame news conference, “It’s just a contusion. So, we’ll see how he feels tomorrow.” Trout had a 1-for-4 performance in the game, hitting two home runs and three RBIs for the revamped Angels, who now have a record of 5-5 this season after taking two out of three games from the defending American League West champions.

Oswald Peraza took Trout’s place in the lineup. In the 11th inning, with the game tied 7-7, Peraza successfully sacrificed a bunt to advance the winning run to third base. Shortly after, Nolan Schanuel’s sacrifice fly brought Adam Frazier home from third to secure the victory.

Suzuki praised the team effort, saying, “We focus on the little things. It’s not going to be perfect. But if we keep focusing, and we stay the course, more times than not, I will feel good about our chances.”

If Trout avoids being placed on the injured list, it would be good news for Suzuki. Last season, the three-time MVP was placed on the IL on May 2 due to a left knee contusion, causing him to miss 26 games. The Angels will begin a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.
