On the field, military dogs are true four-legged heroes: explosives detection, search and rescue missions, or protection of their handlers, their tasks are often very risky. Aware of the importance of their role but also of the dangers they face, the officials of the 132nd Infantry Canine Regiment (RIC) of Suippes, near Châlons (51), have decided to prioritize animal welfare in their training. In recent years, strict rules have indeed framed their training and daily lives, demonstrating that discipline and respect for dogs are not incompatible.

At the Suippes camp, around 550 dogs aged 11 months to 14 years evolve alongside 600 handler-dogs on a unique site in Europe, equipped with vast training grounds and suitable facilities.

These mostly Malinois, German Shepherds, and Dutch Shepherds are trained for various strategic missions: explosives detection, search and rescue, securing sensitive areas, or operational intervention.

Each handler-dog duo undergoes demanding training before being deployed in French territory or in external operations, in Guyana or Lebanon.

As true four-legged soldiers, the effectiveness of these furry balls relies on exceptional qualities like obedience, agility, and a keen sense of smell. However, for over 2 years, the army has also implemented strict rules to ensure their well-being, aiming to balance performance and animal respect.

Animal welfare has become a priority at the 132nd Infantry Canine Regiment in Suippes. Since 2024, their daily routines are guided by a “welfare” charter and a strict canine code, developed with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). The dogs benefit from spacious enclosures, appropriate rest times, regular veterinary follow-up, and even soothing music – classical or the famous “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin – to relax and feel comfortable.

Each handler-dog duo must also follow a code of 10 commandments, with the first one stating that their furry companion is “a fellow soldier and a full-fledged soldier.” The rules also include protections like noise-canceling helmets or booties for paw pads, ensuring that demanding missions fully respect these precious four-legged partners.

Moreover, as explained by L’Hebdo du Vendredi, training exercises, including biting, are done using positive reinforcement, without brutality, to encourage cooperation and the joy of working together. Each dog, based on its character, also receives personalized support and activities to channel its energy.

The army also considers the retirement of these exceptional dogs. At the end of their careers, they are readjusted to join their handler or a family, with careful monitoring.

With these new practices, the regiment demonstrates an increased consideration for animal welfare, something to be pleased about!

(Woopets info – How to adopt a retired military dog?) If you wish to welcome one of these four-legged heroes in retirement, keep in mind that it requires certain conditions to be met. Adopting a retired military dog follows a structured process, designed to ensure a responsible and suitable adoption for each animal. Here’s how to do it: – Identify specialized organizations offering retired military dogs for adoption (cynophile units associations). – Submit an adoption request: a form is usually filled out to present your lifestyle, housing, and expectations. – Attend a selection interview: to verify compatibility between you and the furry friend. – Meet the dog: one or more meetings are arranged to observe behavior and establish an initial bond. – Go through a trial period: often offered, it ensures that integration at home goes smoothly. – Finalize the adoption: sign the contract and commit to meeting the specific needs of the furry friend.
