In the context of the French presidency of the G7, Emmanuel Macron has asked the outgoing president to work on the cooperation of museums.

Leaving the Louvre after four and a half years of service, Laurence des Cars was given a new mission by Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday. As confirmed by Maud Bregeon, government spokesperson at the end of the council of ministers, the former president of the Louvre will now work on the “cooperation of major museums” as part of the French presidency of the G7. For the Élysée, it is about relying on the “undeniable scientific expertise” of the curator while renewing Emmanuel Macron’s “trust” in her.

The presidency of the G7, an informal grouping including Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, is taken over each year by one of the seven states. It is their responsibility to define the agenda and organize preparatory meetings for the annual summit. This year, the summit will take place from June 15 to 17 in Evian.

Laurence des Cars, in an interview with Le Figaro where she announced her resignation on Tuesday, justified her choice by explaining: “the modernization dynamic of the Louvre that I have carried since taking office in September 2021 can no longer be completed. Staying would mean managing the existing when the Louvre needs to continue its transformation.”

To succeed her, Maud Bregeon confirmed that the current president of the Château de Versailles, Christophe Leribault, has been appointed as the president of the Louvre during the Council of Ministers.
