Update: 12 p.m. Friday
On Thursday, April 2, at the request of the Hale County Sheriff’s Office, Special Agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an officer-involved shooting investigation involving an Officer with the Greensboro Police Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when an Officer with the Greensboro Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 1000 Block of Blount Street in Greensboro, located within Hale County.
During the course of the traffic stop, the driver, later identified as Robert Williams, 64, of Greensboro, presented a firearm and shot the Officer. The Officer returned fire, striking Williams. Williams was transported to Hale County Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The Officer was injured and transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor issued the following statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Greensboro Police Officer and his family as he continues to receive care. What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, underscoring the dangers officers face every day. Incidents like this weigh heavily on the entire law enforcement community. We are praying for the Officer’s full recovery and will continue to stand alongside the family and fellow officers during this difficult time.”
Nothing further is available as the investigation remains ongoing.

Our newsroom has learned that a Greensboro police officer and a suspect have been shot.
Details are limited but, here’s what we know.
Hale County EMA Director Russell Weeden confirmed the injured officer and suspect are at the Hale County Hospital.
We’re told the shootout happened during a traffic stop in Magnolia Village in Greensboro.
We don’t know the extent of the injuries of the officer or the suspect.
We do have a crew headed to the scene and will have more information as it becomes available to our newsroom.
