Departure of General Randy George from the US Army
General Randy George has been removed from his position as the Chief of Staff of the US Army, with immediate effect. The reason for his departure has not been disclosed. The American Defense Minister, Pete Hegseth, secured the departure of General Randy George, confirmed by a US official, amid the ongoing war against Iran.
This high-ranking official “will step down as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, with immediate effect,” as stated by Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s spokesperson, wishing him a “pleasant retirement.”
CBS News reports that Pete Hegseth aims to appoint someone who can align with the vision of Donald Trump and his minister for the Army.
General Randy George, a graduate of West Point Military Academy who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was appointed to the position in 2023 during the term of Democratic President Joe Biden.
Cascading Departures
This marks yet another departure among the top ranks of the US military since Donald Trump regained power. Following the dismissal of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Charles “CQ” Brown in early 2025 without explanation, various other military leaders have been ousted, including the heads of the Navy, Coast Guard, NSA, and many others.
According to the Washington Post and CBS, two other generals, David Hodne and William Green Jr, were also removed from their positions simultaneously with General George.
Pete Hegseth, leading a rebranded “Ministry of War,” has emphasized his authority to select the military leaders for the world’s largest budget army.
Democratic opposition lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential politicization of the military, traditionally more detached from political battles compared to other government entities. Last year, Pete Hegseth also decided to reduce the number of top military officials across the entire army.
