Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) – Record-breaking rainfall Tuesday left people across the area to deal with the aftermath.

“Last night, we were watching the Sabres game – go Sabres – and just kind of heard a ‘glurb,'” said Andrea Butler of Greece.

That noise was water coming into her home. It didn’t stop until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

“We’ve never had any water issues,” Butler said. “We’ll get water in the backyard because we’re up on a hill. It doesn’t seem to ever seep into the house.”

Throughout the night, high water invaded homes and roads, trapping several vehicles, including a pair on Elmgrove Road in Greece.

AAA said if your home or vehicle is damaged by severe weather, the first thing you should do is call your insurance agent.

“They’re gonna be able to let you know what those coverages are, make sure you have the proper coverages, review your deductibles with you,” said David Kirst, an insurance sales and operations manager with AAA.

Kirst said if you know bad weather is heading your way, try to be proactive instead of reactive.

“This is not something you want to set it and forget it, and just let it go and hope that everything’s gonna be good,” Kirst said. “Just because it was good for you five years ago.”

Experts also said disasters often attract scammers, and urge people to always be cautious of anyone offering quick repairs or financial help.
