The announcement is now official. Céline Dion will give ten concerts, exclusively in France, and precisely at La Défense Arena in Nanterre, the largest performance venue in Europe. To celebrate her 58th birthday and her return after six years away from the public eye, Céline Dion announced on Monday, March 30, in a video projected on the Eiffel Tower, this mini-residency, a format the artist is familiar with after 16 years of shows in Las Vegas.
“This year, I will receive the best gift of my life. I will have the chance to come see you and again sing for you,” declared the Quebec diva in a radiant voice, in a message broadcast on social media and France 2. At the same time, the Eiffel Tower, where she had captivated the world for the Paris Olympic Games ceremony, was illuminated to the rhythm of the singer’s hits, in front of ecstatic fans.
Ten concerts are planned from September 12 to October 14, at a rate of two concerts per week, on Saturdays and Wednesdays. And the financial stakes are colossal. Even though not everyone can fill La Défense Arena, with 40,000 seats available, the Quebecois star rises to the challenge: selling out ten times in a row.
“It was the perfect setting for her big comeback,” said Arnaud Meersseman, the head of AEG, the event organizer. “We will start with ten dates,” he confirms, “but given the excitement it is generating, we won’t rule anything out.”
Because it’s one of the fans’ biggest concerns: quickly finding tickets has become an obsession for some, who displayed a certain anxiety on the esplanade of the Trocadéro. “I won’t miss Céline! It’s going to be war,” joked friends in front of the Eiffel Tower.
And if this continues, it’s not just the artist and her team who will benefit. In three dates at the Stade de France last year, Bercy estimated that Beyoncé, for example, generated 250 million euros in economic benefits for the French economy. Ticket sales, hotel nights, tourist visits – many sectors can benefit.
This series of ten nights offered by Céline Dion could alone represent one billion euros for our country’s finances. It’s a global audience that will come to discover Paris.
