Lala &ce, one of the most unique figures in French rap, has released her third album, OASIS, on March 13. In this album, she delves even deeper into her world of sensuality, melancholy, and self-affirmation. Known for her distinctive writing, instantly recognizable flow, and rare freedom in the French music scene, she opens a more intimate chapter of her journey. Alongside the album, a documentary called “Lala &ce, 30 -” was aired on France TV, where she reflects on her beginnings, family, Ivorian roots, and her relationship with the music industry. With OASIS, Lala &ce continues to refine her path as an artist who sets her own tempo, rather than following the trends.
“OASIS,” a soulful album: In her previous album, “Solstice,” released in 2023, Lala &ce created a dystopian universe; but in OASIS, her third album, she bares it all with more direct tracks where she showcases her vulnerability. She states, “This album has fewer gimmicks. I have always talked about ‘light’ topics in my discography like love, parties… Now, it seemed good for the audience and for me to go further and show other sides of myself, because I have more to show.”
Consisting of eleven tracks, OASIS dives into her journey, society, all tinged with a certain melancholy. “It’s one of my favorite feelings, I love it, I find it beautiful, even if it’s a bit negative. You can be melancholic and in love, remember a moment with someone, it’s melancholic, but it’s beautiful.”
In a documentary dedicated to her by France TV, Lala &ce’s chosen family describes her as both “an oddity” and “impactful for our generation,” as she writes about reality. As a lesbian woman in the rap scene, she was the first female rapper to talk about women, but she refuses to be pigeonholed by this label. Lala &ce embodies a dual culture, reflecting on her Ivorian heritage through her mother and her French father. She expresses, “I am very close to my Ivorian culture through my mother, we used to go there often when I was young; my father is French. Among my other brothers and sisters, I am the only mixed race in my family, so there are the whites, the blacks, and then there’s me, stuck between both. I have always been stuck between two worlds my whole life.”
Having entered her thirties, Lala &ce aims to become the person she truly desires to be. She reflects, “I think my thirties gave me the desire to constantly evolve, to always be a better version of myself. And for me, the best version is someone who never stops wanting to be better, someone who moves, who wants to discover different cultures, see the world.”
