Min Aung Hlaing has long desired the presidency. The failure of the military party in the 2020 election played a significant role in the coup that removed the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

However, there is a catch: the constitution requires Min Aung Hlaing to relinquish control of the armed forces if he were to become president.

This poses risks, as there are senior commanders who are discontent with his leadership.

He has already selected General Ye Win Oo, a fierce loyalist known for harsh treatment of dissenters, to take his place.

Yet, once Min Aung Hlaing loses control of the military, he risks losing some of his power.

He has also established a new advisory council that he will lead, potentially allowing him to maintain authority over both military and civilian matters.

It is clear that the new government will essentially mirror the current military regime, just in civilian guise.

There is no indication from Min Aung Hlaing or his associates that they plan to change course and cease the violent oppression of dissenters from five years ago.
