The civil defense in the Gaza Strip announced on Sunday the death of nine people in Israeli strikes in the southern territory, which has been devastated by more than two years of war and where a fragile ceasefire is in effect.

On Saturday evening, Israeli strikes targeting police posts in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis resulted in “eight martyrs,” according to Mohammed Al-Mughair, a Hamas-affiliated relief agency official.

“One person was also killed (Sunday) after being fired upon by Israeli forces at a roundabout in Khan Younis,” he told AFP.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, among the victims on Saturday night was “a girl.”

AFP images showed bodies being taken to the morgue at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, then laid out on the ground, wrapped in white shrouds. A woman can be seen screaming, surrounded by crying men and children, during the funerals.

“Every day, the enemy hunts and kills,” lamented Ahmed Al-Soufi, a Palestinian who lost relatives.

When asked about these strikes, the Israeli army did not respond to AFP.

However, they did issue a statement claiming to have “eliminated” a “cell of ten armed Hamas terrorists operating in central Gaza” from Saturday night to Sunday, along with a “terrorist” the day before who had “violated” the truce agreement by crossing the yellow line marking the Israeli troops’ retreat limit.

Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the ceasefire that came into effect on October 10, 2025 after two years of war. The violence continues despite the fact that the Israeli army has been engaged in an air campaign against Iran since February 28.

At least 702 Palestinians have been killed since October 10, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, under Hamas authority, whose figures are deemed reliable by the UN.

The Israeli army has reported five soldiers killed since the beginning of the truce.

Due to media restrictions in Gaza and access difficulties on the ground (international press remains banned by Israeli authorities from entering Gaza), AFP is unable to independently verify information from the different parties.
