The stupid war that is causing young people to detach MAGA

For many young men in the MAGA movement (Make America Great Again), the war in the Middle East is the final straw. Since Donald Trump’s return to power, disappointments have piled up for this group that played a crucial role in his 2024 victory.

“I feel betrayed,” says Razi Marshall, 19, attending the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas.

The young man is disappointed by the president, who had promised to end the “endless wars.” He fears entanglement in Iran and the political consequences for the Republican Party.

“The midterm elections will be a bloodbath for Republicans,” he says amid MAGA merchandise stalls.

A bit further, young people from a group called Republicans for National Renewal have set up an informal survey. The question is simple: for or against the war in Iran?

Participants are asked to place a peanut in a jar to express their opinion. When we visited, both jars were almost equally filled. Although unscientific, the exercise clearly shows that the conflict is divisive.

Alec Beaton, 23, from Michigan, is part of the group that organized this impromptu survey. He doesn’t mince his words. “I think this war is stupid. We should put America first. However, I believe that by going to war with Iran, we are prioritizing Israel’s interests,” he argues.

This line of thought, which has gained traction among the MAGA youth, echoes the views expressed by right-wing and far-right influencers who question the unconditional support of the United States for Israel. This includes renowned host Tucker Carlson, who stated at the start of the U.S. offensive in Iran that “It happened because Israel wanted it.”

Other prominent figures in the MAGA sphere have also criticized the president’s decision, including podcast king Joe Rogan.

“It’s absurd, considering the platform on which he was elected,” he stated.
