Marc Scius, coordinator of CSC Culture, asserts: “We are clearly seeing a decrease in public subsidies allocated to culture. At the federal level first, but it has repercussions everywhere because we are increasing the burdens on regions and municipalities in various ways, which will translate into a decrease in subsidies for culture.”

Already in a precarious situation, culture is indeed one of the first budgets to suffer during austerity periods. And the implications are concrete.

The government believes there are too many festivals: culture in danger

Should cultural products fund themselves by reaching a broader audience?

The consequences will also be felt by the public, warns Alison Luca, whose contract with an association is affected more for some than others. “We used to have very affordable events. A rap concert for 4 euros, was possible with us. The fact that there are no longer these kinds of events at democratic prices isolates people. And that is political.”

An ideological aspect also raised by Marc Scius. “Today, in the government, there are politicians who clearly say that culture should not be subsidized, that it should be financially self-sufficient, or even that it should be an economic actor that brings in money. This contradicts a policy of culture for all.”

Is the government allocating too little budget for culture?
