In “The Triumph of Emotions: Geopolitics between Fear, Anger, and Hope” (Robert Laffont, 2024), Dominique Moïsi, a renowned thinker in international relations known for his pioneering work on collective emotions in geopolitics, proposed an original framework to analyze the contemporary world, combining history, politics, and social psychology. A faithful continuation of his work in “Geopolitics of Emotions: How Cultures of Fear, Humiliation, and Hope Shape the World” (Flammarion, 2008; 2015), this book not only offered valuable insights into major international events through the lens of emotions but also suggested unprecedented reflections for the future. The journal “Espaces” had the pleasure and privilege of interviewing the author.
In a discussion on how dominant emotions shape the choices of key geopolitical actors in 2025, Moïsi highlighted the increased significance of emotions in today’s world, noting a negative evolution marked by heightened fear, anger, and resentment leading to a reduction in hope.
Examining the impact of emotions on geopolitics, Moïsi emphasized the intertwining of emotions and strategic interests, highlighting the complex relationship between the two. He discussed how emotions like fear and resentment can be leveraged as strategic tools, particularly in international relations.
Regarding the revised global landscape with the emergence of a “global South,” a “global East,” and a shifting “global West,” Moïsi reflected on the dissolution of the Western pole, especially with America’s changing role. He questioned whether this realignment would influence future global governance.
Discussing the influence of media and social networks in exacerbating emotions, Moïsi underscored the role of technology in amplifying negative emotions, creating a more complex geopolitical environment. He also explored the dynamic interaction between emotions, geopolitics, and global governance.
In conclusion, Moïsi elaborated on his research journey, from initial skepticism to recognition and acceptance, emphasizing the evolving relevance of his work in understanding the complexities of the contemporary world. This approach, while intuitive and impressionistic, has gained traction among audiences seeking to comprehend the world’s current challenges.
