German President Denounces Political Mistake in US-Iran Conflict
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier sharply criticized the war led by Israel and the United States against Iran on Tuesday, calling it a “serious political mistake.” He believes this conflict was unnecessary and could have been avoided if the real goal had been to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Speaking in Berlin on the 75th anniversary of the rebuilding of the German Foreign Ministry, Steinmeier stated that Iran has never been further from a nuclear bomb since the nuclear agreement in 2015. He pointed out his own involvement in crafting the deal as the former Foreign Minister, before the Trump administration withdrew from it during Trump’s first term.
The German President also urged to distance from the Trump administration and advocated for a realistic approach centered on European and fundamental interests, without giving in to external pressure.
He stressed the need for a more effective and pragmatic foreign policy, while maintaining a strict and clear commitment to international law. Steinmeier also emphasized the importance of not turning a blind eye to international law violations or failing to name them clearly, stating that adherence to international laws and conventions is an essential guarantee for the survival of states that are not major powers and should not be abandoned to justify the actions of other parties.
