Geopolitics of the sky: The new map of air routes for vacations

Global air navigation is going through unprecedented geopolitical turbulence, reshaping the routes between Europe and Asia amidst terrestrial conflicts.

Flying over Russia remains a major constraint for Western carriers, extending flights to Tokyo or Seoul by several hours and resulting in increased kerosene consumption.

Added to this exclusion zone are now Ukraine, Belarus, as well as a large portion of the Middle East including Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, due to escalating regional tensions.

To reach Southeast Asia or East Asia, two main viable corridors remain, albeit congested: the Southern route, bypassing conflict zones through Turkey, Egypt, and Gulf countries before crossing India, and the Transpolar route, favored for connections to North America but increasingly used for certain segments towards northern Asia.

This saturation of remaining corridors causes chokepoints above the Caspian Sea and the Himalayas, forcing air traffic controllers to increase spacing between aircraft.

Meanwhile, Gulf carriers (Emirates, Qatar Airways) and Chinese carriers benefit from continued access to Russian or Iranian airspace, creating a blatant competitive imbalance with European carriers.

Facing these invisible but insurmountable barriers, the sky of 2026 imposes a logistic of precision where each geographic deviation comes at a high cost on the passenger’s ticket.
