Strategic passage for global trade, the Strait of Hormuz has become the most crucial battleground of the [Israeli-American war against Iran], according to The New York Times on March 20. Events of the past few hours seem to have proven the New York newspaper right. The battle around this maritime route is “escalating.”
While about twenty countries – including France – have stated in a statement that they are “ready to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure the security of navigation in the strait,” Donald Trump has threatened Iran with a new ultimatum, reported Politico. In a statement published on his Truth Social network on Saturday, he “assured that the United States ‘will neutralize’ Iranian [power plants] if the Tehran regime does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.”
American strategy remains “confused”
These threats are in line with those made in the early days of the Israeli-American attack, when the American president had given the Iranians a week to reopen the strait. But as noted by the New York Times on its live feed, “Iran has made it clear that it will not yield and has launched new attacks against Israel.”
More than 100 people were injured on Saturday.
