Iranians have written to us to react to the ceasefire between the United States and their country. Between anger and cautious hope, many feel abandoned by Donald Trump.
This suspension of hostilities for two weeks was announced when the war began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran while negotiations were ongoing.
Trump announced on Wednesday that Washington would be willing to work with Iran after what he deemed to be a “productive regime change” and the end of uranium enrichment.
“Our misfortune will worsen”
According to messages from Iran, reactions to the ceasefire are mixed, some even negative. With this truce, some see the possibility of a political change closing.
“We asked you to help us liberate Iran, and not only did you not liberate it, but you have left us with an even worse country, and you have tarnished the memory of 45,000 martyrs,” wrote an Iranian in a message addressed to Trump, referring to those killed in protests against the regime earlier this year. The crackdown resulted in between 3,000 and 30,000 deaths according to estimates.
