French Bishop: “We Regret Weakening of International Organizations”
“We can only regret the weakening of international organizations, starting with the UN, which seriously harms peace,” said the president of the Conference of French Bishops.
The president of the Conference of French Bishops (CEF), Bishop Jean-Marc Aveline, described the “dramatic and very worrying” geopolitical context in which Easter is celebrated this year in an interview with La Tribune on Sunday. “For the past five weeks, the Middle East has been engulfed in an unrelenting war,” he deplored, stating that “it is high time we return to respecting international law.”
“Call for Solidarity”
He reiterated his “call for solidarity” towards Lebanon, “always a victim of the great powers that surround it,” through donations to the Œuvre d’Orient “with which the Church of France very concretely helps the Lebanese people and all Christians in the Middle East.”
Asked about when Pope Francis, who will receive Emmanuel Macron next Friday and is also planned to visit Spain in June, would come to France, Bishop Aveline said they are working on it. “I discussed the issue with the Pope a few days ago. For now, we need to prepare our hearts to welcome his visit,” he replied.
