Three sources familiar with the discussions reported that the US administration is preparing an international summit on the so-called “antifa” movement. This movement comprises far-left extremist groups claiming to be anti-fascist, and the summit aims to explore ways to combat them.
Scheduled for June or July, the conference reflects a clear shift in US counterterrorism since Donald Trump’s return to power. The administration views the “antifa” movement as a threat to the United States.
Representatives from various countries will convene at the summit to discuss strategies and promote information sharing. While experts note that the “antifa” movement is not organized as a single entity, individuals claiming affiliation have been involved in armed attacks within the US.
Thomas DiNanno, the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, is expected to attend the summit, according to two sources. The White House and State Department spokespeople have described “antifas” as a significant concern for the Trump administration.
Some are skeptical about the summit, especially as the US is military engaged with Iran. Michael Jacobson, a former director within the State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau, questions the necessity of diverting anti-terrorism resources towards the “antifa” threat.
While the list of participating countries is yet to be finalized and invitations have not been sent, European governments are anticipated to receive prominent invitations. In November last year, the US administration designated European “antifa” groups as “foreign terrorist organizations.”
In September 2025, President Trump signed a decree naming the “antifa” movement as a “terrorist organization” following the assassination of extreme-right influencer Charlie Kirk, attributed to radical leftists. Publicly available information on the presumed assassin, Tyler Robinson, does not link him to the far-left extremist movement.
