Since his inauguration in January 2025, Donald Trump has led brutal attacks against science and scientific institutions, particularly targeting climate-related issues, environmental protection, and public health. Budget cuts, credit freezes, mass layoffs, investigations, censorship, campus arrests, harshening immigration policies, intimidation, and repression have been on the rise.

After pulling his country out of the Paris Accords, President Trump banned diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and removed thousands of web pages from federal sites mentioning topics he prohibited. A year later, these attacks have worsened.

In response to this widespread obscurantist and oppressive offensive, astonishment and indignation have given way to resistance. A year ago, the Stand Up for Science movement emerged in the United States. During a demonstration on March 7th, they chanted the slogan “Save Science, Protect Health, Defend Democracy.”

In Paris, the procession will depart from Jussieu at 4 p.m. to reach the Pantheon.

Since February 18, 2025, the French Academy of Sciences has expressed solidarity with the scientific world in the United States, stating that the impact on future generations, biodiversity, and the planet’s health will be catastrophic. The damage caused in such a short time will take much longer to repair.

On January 15 of this year, the prestigious Academy issued another warning titled “Science is in decline” following the dismantling of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the U.S. withdrawal from several international organizations, including the IPCC. The world’s scientific heritage is being depleted, the Academy declared.

In France, budget cuts are depriving scientific institutions of the necessary means to function properly, putting them in difficulty and even in danger. Over the past twenty years, there has been a gradual elimination of positions and precariousness among staff and students, destabilizing the production and transmission of knowledge.

In response to Stand Up for Science’s call, new demonstrations will take place tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, 2026. In Paris, the procession will depart from Jussieu at 4 p.m. to reach the Pantheon.

According to the organizers, the goal is to affirm the importance of science for democracy. “Without university, without top-level science, we condemn ourselves to a dark future.” The aim is to “communicate our pride and joy in conducting research, being a student, practicing mediation or science journalism, and working to make the University an institution of the most demanding knowledge and thinking. The joy of research, of knowledge, of transmission necessitates having a free spirit. This entails protective statutes for some and free education for others.”
