LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Families and community members gathered at the Science Spectrum on Saturday to learn how to stay one step ahead of weather emergencies. Local meteorologists and other organizations teamed up with Texas Tech to share tips on how to respond when severe weather strikes.

Staying aware and prepared

KCBD Lead Forecaster Steve Divine says staying aware can make all the difference. “We want to give people an idea of what severe weather is and then steps you can take to help protect your property, yourself and your family,” Steve said. “There’s a lot of information dispersed during Severe Weather Awareness Day to help people understand what it is and what they can do to help protect themselves.”

Steve said weather is ever-changing, especially in West Texas. Steve says that’s why so many people are interested in learning more. “There’s so much in the atmosphere to see, just the cloud development, our sunsets – but when we have thunderstorms that form, the awesomeness of the weather, just to watch what is going on, it’s a show that Mother Nature puts on for us, it’s just amazing to watch and to be a part of it,” Steve said.

Learning about weather

Attendees had the chance to interact with weather displays, ask questions and learn how quickly conditions can change. Steve said he is happy to see the younger generations taking an interest. “It’s a great feeling, knowing the kids do get involved in weather, that they are paying attention to it, so when they come up to you and they say hi and they know your name, we know that it’s not just adults that we are communicating with, it is the kids, and of course, the kids much more open to come up to you and say hi, so it’s just a good feeling,” Steve said.

No matter the season, Steve says when it comes to emergencies, knowing what to do before they happen can change lives. He says he is happy to have a small part in helping viewers stay informed and prepared for whatever weather lies ahead. “Lubbock has been a really great place to be a forecaster because we do get these periods where the weather can be difficult to forecast, so it’s a challenge that I and the rest of the team look forward to,” Steve said.
