The Ministry of Defense plans to strengthen the regional industrial ecosystem with a targeted plan on maritime autonomy and skills through an investment of £50 million.

The British Ministry of Defense has just announced a £50 million investment in Plymouth and the southwest of the UK, aimed at supporting the growth of defense companies, reducing regulatory constraints, and creating hundreds of skilled jobs.

This funding is part of the “Plymouth Defence Growth Deal” and includes the extension of the National Centre for Marine Autonomy, enabling the development of surface and underwater maritime drones through advanced testing infrastructure.

The project also involves the creation of a dedicated testing authority, the Plymouth Marine Autonomy Trials Authority, to accelerate the market entry of technologies developed by startups and industrial players.

Additionally, a training component will see the establishment of 60 specialized courses through Plymouth City College, covering areas such as advanced manufacturing and engineering to meet sector needs.

The Ministry emphasizes that this investment adds to over £6.6 billion already spent in the region by 2024/25, supporting 37,300 jobs, and aligns with a trajectory of increased defense spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027.
