A dozen European publishing actors in 2024 presented the “ThinkPub Toolbox,” explained at the time as “an innovative program of training and learning” for the industry. In this context, EDRLab and PILEn joined forces and expertise to implement several events.
Three modules were thus spread over four different days in Bordeaux on February 3, at the Brussels Book Fair on March 27, then at the Belgian capital’s BD Museum on April 10, focusing on “visual and digital storytelling.” The last meeting, dedicated to marketing innovations for books, is still to be finalized.
“It’s a first co-organization, but we have already attended each other’s events in the past (Digital Publishing Summit, PILEn Colloquia, Book+Tech, Royal Library of Belgium, etc.). Moreover, PILEn has been a member of EDRLab for several years,” recalls Gautier Chomel, digital book and accessibility project manager for EDRLab.
“Our two organizations are animated by a common and complementary ambition: to actively support the actors of the book chain in the face of the constantly evolving digital environment,” notes PILEn.
The Interprofessional Partnership for Books and Digital Editions thus aims to offer book professionals support to better master new technologies and seize all opportunities. “This demanding context, marked by a sustained need for research and development (R&D) and often significant innovation costs, especially for small publishing structures, requires increased cooperation between public, interprofessional, and technical organizations.”

Both organizations are also working on crucial topics for book actors. EDRLab is developing the free and accessible reading solution Thorium and the interoperable digital lock LCP, while PILEn is exploring the impacts and opportunities of artificial intelligences for the book sector, or the changes in the book ecosystem and the role of reading within it.
