Madhav Rathour, 45, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, began his career at Indian Oil. After completing an MBA at emlyon, he realized the importance of moving away from fossil fuels. In late 2025, after consulting with Bruno Chaudret, a research director at CNRS, Rathour launched Catmag in Toulouse. The goal is to produce biomethane, green methanol, and synthetic fuels with higher efficiency than current solutions.

To achieve this, Catmag utilizes technology using magnetic induction catalysis, intensifying chemical reactions to convert CO2, CO, and hydrogen into valuable molecules like methane, methanol, and SAF.

Despite receiving billions in aid, the decarbonization of the industry is still a challenge. Catmag plans to launch a pilot site in Toulouse or Lyon by October, developing 5-meter containers with five 25-kilowatt modules. Rathour plans to offer this technology to industrial giants like Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, Technip, and Engie, aiming to expand internationally, especially in Spain.

Catmag’s strategy includes direct sales of standard modules and strategic partnerships for technological licensing. The startup targets a revenue of 150,000 euros this year, aiming for over 4 million euros by the end of the decade.

Last December, Catmag received 120,000 euros as an honorary loan from accelerator Wilco. They have also applied for the i-Lab innovation contest, hoping to secure 600,000 euros. By the end of the year, they plan to raise 1.2 million euros from business angels and green and deeptech funds.

– Context: Madhav Rathour transitioned from the oil industry to establish Catmag, focusing on sustainable fuel solutions. – Fact Check: Rathour’s company, Catmag, aims to produce biomethane, green methanol, and synthetic fuels with better efficiency.
