Exail has announced the success of the European project EURISA, funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 program. Bringing together four major players in the European space ecosystem, this project aimed to develop a high-performance inertial unit, entirely European and independent of navigation technologies subject to ITAR regulations (the American regulations on international arms trafficking).
The EURISA project, led by Exail in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space, ETH Zurich, and the German aerospace center (DLR in Bremen), has given rise to a fully functional engineering model of an inertial unit intended for future space missions.
This compact system, weighing around 2kg, integrates fiber optic gyroscopes, quartz accelerometers, and onboard electronics capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space. Rigorous test campaigns (including vibration and shock resistance as well as tests in thermal vacuum chambers) have validated its robustness.
The culmination of this project marks a step towards European technological sovereignty in space navigation. Building on the success of EURISA, Exail will continue to develop its technologies to support future European space missions.
