Frank McCourt has broken his silence. Rare in the media, the American owner of OM spoke in the columns of JDD on Saturday about the situation of his club and in particular the arrival of new investors.
«I think it’s time to start this process because I really want Marseille to move to the next level. I am very proud of what we have accomplished and the respect we have gained in the world of football. The next level, and hopefully the highest level, will require additional investments. We want to find the right strategic partner to achieve this,» he said, adding that it was «still too early to say more».
Benatia’s departure confirmed
OM also needs to find a replacement for their sports director, Medhi Benatia, who is close to leaving the club in February and whose departure at the end of the season has been confirmed by the American businessman. «After receiving his resignation, I personally asked him to extend his notice period and I thank him for agreeing as it was essential to finish the season,» explained Frank McCourt. «Medhi is an excellent sports director. He will stay until the end of the season and then it will be over. It’s his wish and what we agreed upon.
A new president expected by the end of the season
While Pablo Longoria, OM’s president since February 2021, officially left the Marseille club on Monday, Frank McCourt is also looking for a new president. «My preference is for someone who knows France and Marseille well, because I think it is crucial to understand the culture of the club. The person must also be a seasoned manager,» assured Frank McCourt.
«As the years go by, we have a growing understanding of how a club like Marseille should be run, with a strong president who represents the owner. We are very clear about our needs. This is obviously a fundamental role. I hope we will have the opportunity to announce the new president before the end of the season,» added the OM owner.
