The Vierzon FC undergoes significant changes in local politics. Following the victory of the far right in the municipal elections, president Marvin Sampson announces his departure, citing a tense atmosphere and the need to protect the club.

Since March 22, in Vierzon, the political and social climate has remained under tension after a historic upheaval at the polls. The victory of Yannick Le Roux, leading a far-right unity list, with 47.9% of the votes, ended nearly 90 years of communist management. This change did not sit well with many, including the president of the city’s football club, which plays in National 3.

In office for almost two and a half years at Vierzon FC, Marvin Sampson announced on March 24 that he would step down before the summer, disagreeing with the new political direction and values of the new mayor. “I sense a lot of negative signals, so I will stop. I think there may be a personal problem. I don’t want to put my association in a false light. The most important thing for me is the financial and sporting health of the club,” he explained to France Info.

A decision “to protect the club”

On the other hand, the new mayor assures that there will be no budget cuts or severe measures. However, he mentions an upcoming audit on certain associations deemed inactive or poorly attended.

Reacting to this resignation, Yannick Le Roux believes it is a “mature decision” intertwining “politics and sport”: “So be it. Good luck. The Vierzon Football Club existed before him, and it will exist after him.” He also confirms working on his succession, considering the “incident closed.”
