For several years, the former striker has been involved in the United Sport Cup, an association he founded with a clear ambition: to use sports as a tool for learning, inspiration, and unity for youth, especially in the Overseas territories.
And this year, the project is taking on a new dimension. From June 1st to 8th, Martinique will host the new edition. Legends from Olympique Lyonnais will make the trip to share their experience with young Martinican talents. The program includes meetings, padel tournaments, and above all, a unique match. A significant moment, designed as a real bridge between generations and cultures.
“I want to please our community, our youth, by bringing guests and mentors over several editions,” said Frederic Piquionne.
Beyond the meeting, a tournament will bring together a Martinican selection against former Lyon players. A symbolic match, between dream and reality. “This year, the legends of OL, those who won everything in the 2000s, will be in Martinique. It’s also important culturally.”
The association is part of a sustainable approach: to support young people well beyond the field. For Frederic Piquionne, football is just a starting point. What matters are the values transmitted: discipline, teamwork, perseverance. “We started with Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Guyane, but we want to expand to New Caledonia, Reunion, Madagascar, and beyond.”
If the event is already attracting attention, it is also thanks to the announced presence of several football figures. “There are legends who have already confirmed,” names like Cristiano Marques Gomes, the Lyon defender nicknamed Cris, and Sidney Govou are present.
Through this initiative, Frederic Piquionne also seeks to highlight Martinique, its dynamism, its sports potential, but above all its culture. A way to reposition the overseas territories at the heart of exchanges and opportunities.
Over the editions, the United Sport Cup is gradually establishing itself in the landscape of sports initiatives dedicated to the overseas youth. With this 4th edition in Martinique, the association confirms its ambition: to be locally rooted while expanding its reach.
While the June event still has to prove itself on the field, it could also serve as a model for other territories. The challenge now goes beyond just a tournament: to structure a sustainable network around sports, capable of creating opportunities for young generations.
