After winning her 6th overall globe, tying Annemarie Moser-Pröll’s record, Mikaela Shiffrin was understandably very happy and did not forget to congratulate Emma Aicher.
While not shining this Wednesday, Mikaela Shiffrin at least made sure of it. By finishing in 11th place in the giant of Lillehammer, Norway, the American skier won the overall globe for the 6th time, allowing her to equal the record solely held by the Austrian Annemarie Moser-Pröll. Naturally, after making history, the Colorado native was understandably very emotional and proud of her historic performance.
“This race sums up the whole season, with a lot of work and a beautiful battle. Emma (Aicher) was incredible all season, and after the first round, I thought she could do it. So, I am happy to be in the lead, but I am also very grateful for the fight we both led,” explained Shiffrin upon her arrival, in statements collected by Eurosport.
Shiffrin: “I felt a whirlwind of emotions”
“I really felt a whirlwind of emotions because my team said it was good and I was there, no, it’s not good. (…) We argued a bit about it and I was like, are you guys really sure because I’m starting to cry and I don’t really want to celebrate it until it’s really secure? (…) I have to say to Emma that her skiing was simply exceptional,” also declared the American skier, in statements reported by Nordic Skiing.
“I really thought she could do it. And that’s the most beautiful thing in alpine skiing: everything is possible,” continued the main person of interest, who also silenced some rumors about her. “I will race next season, I will not stop now. The question is valid, I am closer to the end than the beginning, but they are just rumors,” announced Shiffrin, on Austrian television. So let’s meet in a few months. With the goal of becoming the only holder of seven overall globes?
