Senegal has officially filed an appeal. A week after the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip the Senegalese of their title in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to their exit from the field during the final against Morocco, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Wednesday that they have “recorded an appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation”.
This appeal was expected for several days. Not surprisingly, Senegal is demanding the annulment of CAF’s decision and the recovery of their title won on the field, in extra time, thanks to a goal from Pape Gueye. The final was marked by a heated controversy at the end of the match, when the referee awarded a penalty to the Moroccans, ultimately missed by Brahim Diaz. In protest, the Senegalese then left the field, before returning a few minutes later.
“A CAS arbitration panel will be appointed to rule on this matter, following which a procedural schedule will be established,” the statement said. No hearing date has been set yet.
“CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the help of specialized and independent arbitrators,” said Matthieu Reeb, director general of CAS. “We are aware that the teams and fans want to know the final decision as soon as possible and we will ensure that the arbitration process can be conducted promptly, while respecting the rights of all parties to benefit from a fair process. ”
