In closing the 27th round of Ligue 1, Strasbourg traveled to face FC Nantes. Ranked 8th at kickoff, the Alsace team needed a win to keep their hopes for Europe alive. On the other side, Vahid Halilodzic, brought in to save the club, made his debut as coach of the Canaries. For this match, the Nantes coach chose a 4-3-3 formation with Tabibou on the right, Abline on the left, and Ganago up front in the attacking trio. On the opposing side, RCSA lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Fofana lead the attack.
Energetic, FCN quickly attacked and were rewarded for their efforts. Tabibou, served by Abline, scored with a left-footed strike that beat Penders on his right side (1-0, 6th minute). Nantes continued to push forward and put pressure on Strasbourg. However, despite several clear opportunities (18th, 34th, 43rd), they couldn’t extend their lead and were punished just before halftime. Unchallenged, Maximillian Oyedele moved forward and unleashed a beautiful shot with his right foot that found the bottom corner of the net (1-1, 45+2nd minute).
Panichelli, the X factor
Despite the setback, RCSA continued to face Nantes’ attacks. Transformed and more assertive in their play, Nantes took the lead again early in the second half. Abline, set up by Awaziem, resisted Hogsberg’s challenge and beat the Alsace goalkeeper (2-1, 53rd minute). In the final half-hour, Nantes held on thanks to Lopes’ crucial saves, but RCSA managed to equalize. Substitute Panichelli scored the equalizer (2-2, 78th minute) and boosted his team.
A cruel twist followed as three minutes earlier Ganago had the chance to score but his shot was deflected onto the post by Penders (75th minute). In the closing stages, as expected, Strasbourg snatched the victory. Despite hitting the post again through Ganago (82nd minute) and Penders making a decisive save (87th minute), Strasbourg secured the win thanks to Panichelli, who scored off a rebound from Nanasi’s shot (2-3, 90+2nd minute). Final score: 3-2. With this result, Nantes remains in 17th place and deepens their crisis. Strasbourg stays 8th but still dreams of Europe.
