The 2026 edition of the Paris Marathon is scheduled for Sunday. For the first time in this race, participants will have to do without water cups and bottles. To hydrate, they will need to stop and fill their own containers at water stations.

No more hundreds of crushed cups littering the Parisian pavement on marathon day. The 2026 edition of the event, taking place on Sunday, April 12, marks the disappearance of water bottles and cups from the refreshment tables. To drink, the runner will have to bring their own container (cup, flask, bag) and fill it at a station where there will be self-service taps or with the help of a volunteer armed with a hose. The change has divided the runners. Apart from the criticism over the time loss involved, some are concerned about the risks.

Initiated by the municipality, which aimed to make its events more environmentally friendly, the change in the hydration system was immediately validated by the race’s medical director. The medical director assures there is no fear on his part as there have never been cases of dehydration. The only concern is for hyperthermia and hyponatremia (linked to an excess of hydration). Some runners worry about the impact on performance and safety. The medical team advises runners to listen to their bodies and drink according to their thirst.

Former French marathon record holder Christelle Daunay highlights the importance of hydrating well before the marathon. The marathon’s medical director emphasizes that hyperthermia cases are not related to hydration and urges runners to cool themselves by pouring water on their heads.

To avoid long queues, organizers have increased the number of water points along the route. Additionally, they have provided water bottles for elite runners who can finish in under 2h50. This is a first adaptation to cater to very fast amateur runners, ensuring that their comfort during the race is not compromised.

Overall, the new hydration system has sparked mixed reactions, with some concerns about time loss but also an effort to promote eco-friendly practices in marathon running. Both runners and organizers will need to adapt to ensure the success and safety of future races.
