Real Madrid suffered a major setback in the title race after Barcelona’s victory over Atletico. The match was marked by a controversial refereeing decision that angered the Madrid club.

The weekend proved decisive in La Liga as even with Kylian Mbappe starting, Real Madrid lost to Majorca (2-1) on Saturday in the 30th round of the championship. This result allowed Barcelona to pull seven points ahead in the standings after their win against Atletico (1-2).

Following their rival’s lead in the title race, Real Madrid criticized the officiating in the match between Atletico and Barcelona. The issue stemmed from the VAR decision to overturn Gerard Martin’s red card for a dangerous challenge in the 50th minute, with Barcelona playing with ten men.

Real Madrid TV denounced the unequal refereeing treatment, despite no player or official from Real Madrid publicly criticizing the decision during the Barcelona match. The club’s TV channel raised the issue on the show “Real Madrid Conecta,” questioning the discrepancies in treatment between the two title contenders in La Liga. This critique intensified after Federico Valverde’s red card against Atletico and subsequent suspension in the Majorca defeat.

The Real Madrid TV channel highlighted that VAR seemed to favor Barcelona more often, with the technical refereeing committee remaining silent on the matter. This silence contrasted with the committee’s usual practice of reviewing contentious situations in matches and even publicly critiquing referees’ decisions in La Liga, especially after Gerard Martin’s red card was rescinded.

The Real Madrid TV show, “Real Madrid Conecta,” pointed out a clear disparity in the use of VAR between the two clubs. According to their assessment, Barcelona benefited from thirteen VAR interventions in their favor compared to seven unfavorable decisions, while Real Madrid had only three favorable decisions and eleven unfavorable ones.
