Montpellier has taken a draw (2-2) against the leader of Ligue 2, Troyes, but could have hoped for more, in this match as in the rankings, given the scenario of this 29th championship day. No winner between Montpellier and Troyes under the beautiful sun of Mosson, on Saturday, April 4, 2026 for the 29th day of Ligue 2. Montpellier was ahead, Montpellier was behind, Montpellier was eventually caught up, for a 2-2 draw and one point taken against the league leader, with a fifth consecutive match without losing (two wins, three draws). But with the feeling that there was probably more to gain, considering the afternoon’s proceedings.
Montpellier manages to regain the advantage just before half-time. After a fine run by Theo Chennahi, like a slalom, Montpellier is awarded a penalty. Alexandre Mendy initially sees his shot saved by the goalkeeper from Troyes, before striking back forcefully above the bar, for his 11th goal of the season (2-1 at half-time).
Troyes starts the second half better, hitting the post in the 53rd minute with a curling shot from Mathys Detourbet. Regrets will come from the action that leads to Troyes’ equalizer: Everson Junior’s back pass turns into an assist and Tawfik Bentayeb chips over Simon Ngapandouetnbu (2-2). Despite clear offensive intentions towards the end of the game, Troyes closes ranks against an opponent content with the draw, and Montpellier will never manage to take the lead again.
A reference to controversial refereeing, Montpellier can objectively and logically feel aggrieved. To name just two situations, the most blatant: a goal disallowed for Alexandre Mendy due to a non-existent offside position (14th minute) and a penalty forgotten for the same Enzo Molebe (33rd minute), who was clearly fouled in the box.
Montpellier remains 7th and does not take advantage of Reims’ draw, 5th, held at home against Boulogne-sur-Mer (0-0). With a victory, Montpellier could have come back to within just one point of the playoff spot. The gap remains at four points, with five matches still to play before the end of the season. Everything is still possible, even though opportunities will diminish. Montpellier will travel to Annecy next Friday for the 30th matchday.
