Northampton, unfortunate finalist of the last edition, dominated a resilient Castres team (49-41) in the Champions Cup round of 16 on Friday and advanced to the Top 8 for the third consecutive year.
The journey for the team from Castres ended once again on Northampton’s field, where they were defeated last year, while the Saints will face another English club in the quarterfinals, against the winner of the Bath vs. Saracens match scheduled for Saturday.
The Saints struggled to overcome CO, despite being undisciplined and sometimes lacking clarity, but they were competitive and ultimately pulled ahead in a messy second half.
The CO had a strong start. As hoped for during the week, Xavier Sadourny’s men began the game by taking control with two quick tries from Christian Ambadiang and Théo Chabouni. However, Castres lost their focus with confrontations towards the English star Henry Pollock, leading to two successive yellow cards and allowing the English champions to close the gap.
Capable of breaching the defensive line with well-placed passes, the English team found opportunities after halftime. They capitalized on their chances, scoring through Freeman, Furbank, Kemeny, and McParland. The lead was further extended by the accurate kicking of Saints’ French fly-half Anthony Belleau, who converted all six attempts.
Despite their struggles in the league, Castres put up a strong fight, responding to the English attacks with opportunistic plays and the collective talent personified by the outstanding Vuate Karawalevu, who scored a try before exiting due to injury.
Similar to last season’s quarterfinal, Castres received a third yellow card, this time to Veresa Ramototabua for a high tackle, effectively ending their chances as Fraser Dingwall punished them.
Northampton’s journey continues, with the possibility of facing other French teams in the semi-finals, placing them in the same bracket as Toulouse and Bordeaux-Bègles, who defeated them in the last final.
