It had been announced, this summit clash had all the hallmarks of a trap match. And the facts confirmed the fears of the Lot.
GSF lost for the first time this season at home, the “red and black” struggled to stay on top against Levezou Segala Aveyron XV, more pragmatic and terribly efficient (19-24). The team of Adrien Cavalerie only salvaged the essentials at the end of the match, grabbing an almost unexpected defensive bonus.
Right from the start, the Aveyronnais imposed their tempo. Powerful and organized, the visitors dominated the field around their carried balls and pick and go plays. The locals tried to spread out, but were met with a solid defense.
After ten minutes, Casals concluded a well-structured maul, cementing the dominance of the “yellow and greens” (0-7). The Célé residents reacted timidly, taking advantage of the opponent’s indiscipline to close the gap through Sabut (6-7), but never truly reversed the trend.
As minutes went by, the debates remained intense, but the players of Lévézou showed more control. At the half-hour mark, Raymond doubled the lead for the visitors with another carried ball (6-14). Worse, the Lot-based team ended the first half with 13 after two yellow cards, forced to endure without completely breaking. Halftime was almost welcome.
The scenario got tougher after the break. On a poorly handled reception in the Figeac 22m, Lacan emerged to score an opportunistic try, converted shortly after by Mercadier (6-21). The gap was made. The Lot players, struggling in conversions, weak in tackles, and failing in lineouts, found it hard to regain possession. Thanks to Mercadier’s kicks, the visitors extended the lead (9-24), punishing the local indiscipline.
Despite some attempts by Legrand, the trio of Landes-Richard-Issart’s men could not break through the opponent’s defensive line. The match seemed settled.
But in the last ten minutes, Figeacois finally showed some life, as seen in Fabre’s breakthrough. Eager to set a frantic rhythm, the forwards took control of the ball and pounded the opponent’s line. Pradayrol-Labarthe finished this strong period, reviving hope (16-24). Shortly after, Doumbia broke through and won a penalty, converted by Sabut in injury time, earning a defensive bonus (19-24).
However, it was too late to overturn a solid and realistic Aveyronnais team. The locals may have regrets as their reaction came too late. Still leading, the players of President Thouron see their pursuers dangerously closing in before a risky trip to Nérac for the final day of the regular phases.
