This week, the film The Whale is being shot at Espiguette.

This fictional story is inspired by the true events of a beached whale in 1989 in Port-la-Nouvelle.

At the time, the procedure was to take the carcass out to sea and dynamite it, but one man wanted to “save” it, and patiently cleaned the bones and then reassembled the skeleton of this whale measuring over 20 meters long.

This film directed by Sylvère Petit, a man from Gard, and produced by Ici Mediterranée (Montpellier) was filmed in Aude, and the Espiguette beach was chosen to capture the images of the beached whale.

The team waited for months for nature’s cooperation and for a whale to wash up on any beach in France, but the opportunity did not arise, and they can no longer wait.

Therefore, even though Sylvère Petit favors reality, living things, and inter-species approach, they will be using a team specialized in visual effects, Les Tontons Truqueurs from Montpellier.

The Whale is expected to be released in cinemas in the first half of 2027, starring Sergi López, Solène Rigot, Moussa Maaskri, and Annie Gregorio.

Additionally, at the Espiguette lighthouse, there is an exhibition dedicated to the filming of this movie. Outdoors, it is freely accessible until May 1st.
