The principle was simple. Image’Est collected a selection of small silent archive films on various local subjects – textiles, skiing, the thermal baths of Vittel – in connection with the bicentenary of photography. With the principle of “seeing a photographer on the screen,” notes Mathilde Gaulard, the BMI coordinator of this highlight of the festival “Spinal makes its cinema.” Around these selected films, a team of BMI, composed of Pauline, Sophie, Laury, Anaïs, and Hélène in connection with their coordinator, also selected a dozen texts that they read live over the animated images (12 films and 6 photographs), giving a new echo to these images from another time.

From La P’tite monnaie by the singer Benabar to Souvenir de la marée basse by Chantal Thomas, passing through Les grandes vacances by Robert Doisneau and Daniel Pennac, Finistère by Anne Berest or even Le petit Nicolas by Sempé, the audience was able to rediscover these precious archives in a new light, reinterpreted in the light of literature and writings echoing them. An original and enjoyable initiative that should be taken up again for the Heritage Days 2026 and during the collection of archive films from Image’Est. And that refers to the power of images and the words associated with them.
