The documentary by director Malcolm Venville on the British hard rock band IRON MAIDEN, titled Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition, will be released in cinemas on May 13, 2026 via Universal Pictures International France.

Here’s the synopsis:

Covering five decades and thanks to unique access to the band’s historical and current members and its vast archives, Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition invites viewers and loyal fans to celebrate the journey of one of the most iconic musical groups of our time. This exhilarating documentary traces the band’s rise from their first pub gigs in East London to the biggest stadiums worldwide. Through exclusive interviews with members and personalities like Javier Bardem, Lars Ulrich, or Chuck D, along with never-before-seen animation of Eddie, their famous mascot, the film provides an intimate portrait of a creative force, maintaining an unbreakable bond with its fans around the globe.

Director Malcolm Venville explains: “The implementation of IRON MAIDEN: BURNING AMBITION did not stem from the band itself but from its fans. Our initial conversations with Iron Maiden’s fan club members made us realize that we were not dealing with mere loyal followers, but with a culturally significant phenomenon on an international scale. When Iron Maiden goes on tour, so do their fans. They don’t just attend one or two shows, they follow the band throughout their tours, around the world. United by strong bonds, they form a true community, and many have built their lives around their passion for music. Iron Maiden’s audience is more diverse than the heavy metal stereotypes suggest. Their fans come from various backgrounds and all walks of life, from small business owners to politicians. The Japanese Prime Minister and his Canadian counterpart are Iron Maiden fans. As one of our contributors explains, it’s as if a kind of DNA, transcending continents and social and cultural origins, connects them.”

He adds: “It is through their spirit of absolute independence that Iron Maiden has inspired me the most. From their beginnings, they composed and produced their music based solely on their instincts. They never compromised their sound or image to conform to the demands of the music industry, as many heavy metal bands did during the MTV era of hair metal. Iron Maiden continued on their path, unaffected by the panic wave, often labeled as ‘satanic,’ triggered by their album covers and music videos. Their songs drew inspiration from history, literature, armed conflicts, mythology, and philosophy, subjects rarely addressed in popular music.”

Finally, the director concludes: “The band members were more comfortable with audio interviews, which I initially saw as restrictive but turned out to be liberating. The absence of cameras allowed them to express themselves more freely, and their words and reflections gained intimacy and disclosure. The film became a story of ascent, collapse, and resurrection, told through the various voices of the band, including that of Paul Di’Anno, their first singer, who delivers a poignant testimony. He speaks candidly about his experience within the band and the circumstances of his departure, in an interview that will prove to be the last before his passing. The band members’ reluctance to submit to filmed interviews also led to the emergence of a major figure in their history: the character of Eddie, their mascot. As their manager Rod Smallwood explains, Eddie was initially created to counterbalance Steve Harris’s shy and reserved nature. A sort of undead, Eddie appears on almost all of the band’s album and single covers, establishing himself as its public image, its iconic alter ego. Created by artist Derek Riggs, Eddie has evolved through multiple incarnations and echoes the vast story of Iron Maiden. With specially created animated sequences for the film, incorporating visuals and illustrations from the past five decades, Eddie serves as our guide, a thread throughout the journey.”
